A Milford Sound cruise should be a 'must do' activity for all visitors to New Zealand. On a cruise you'll see nature at its most perfect. And more than likely dolphins up close and personal! A Milford Sound cruise is truly special and will grant you a front row seat to the majestic scenery all around you. Throughout the Milford Sound, towering snow-capped and rainforested peaks surround the flooded glaciated valley. Watching over the scene like a sentinel whose head scrapes the sky is the iconic Mitre Peak, which is so-named because of its resemblance to a bishop's mitre. At 1692m in height, Mitre Peak also happens to be one of the tallest peaks in the world that immediately rises from sea level. Sitting right across from the iconic mountain is Stirling Falls, which tumbles 155m beneath a hanging valley formed between the imaginatively-named Elephant and Lion Mountains. Near the head of the Milford Sound, Bowen Falls makes a dramatic 161m tumble. For those who prefer to stay above the water's surface, activities such as kayaking are available - indeed, it is possible to see seals and dolphins playing in and out of the water on a guided kayak tour. Milford Sound is one of a series of fiords located in the Fiordland National Park on New Zealand's West Coast region. Once described by the famous English author Rudyard Kipling as the "eighth wonder of the world", Milford Sound lives up to the hype. Accessed by road through the Homer Tunnel, Milford Sound features towering, mist covered peaks, thundering waterfalls, deep dark waters, and some of New Zealand's favourite marine wildlife. A cruise on Milford Sound (including a visit to the underwater observatory) is the best way to see it, and you will be amazed at the sheer size and majesty of the place. It is one of those places that you will remember forever.
